An amazing part of OCD Recovery is that the skills are highly teachable. Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) - yes, the field loves acronyms! It is an acceptance-based, action oriented, and empowering approach that helps people learn how to change their relationship with the OCD, which is a freeing process!

While ERP is about learning how to face your fears, there are MANY parts of the ERP process. It is common for people to have tried ERP (either in therapy or self-directed) and to have unintentionally missed key elements of the ERP process that are necessary to make significant gains. This comprehensive program covers ALL THE ELEMENTS of ERP, the additional acceptance-based approaches, and breaks down the steps for mastering ERP and your OCD.  

OCD is sneaky, creative and persistent. Its job is to make you feel as though the intrusive thoughts (images, urges, sensations) are highly important, must be listened to, and require immediate attention and action. Since the OCD can feel so distressing, it makes sense that people get stuck doing their rituals, since rituals often provide immediate relief. However, the relief is only temporary and unfortunately the rituals just make the OCD stronger.

 

The goal of OCD recovery is straightforward: Learn how to accept (and even lean into!) the uncertainty, anxiety and/or discomfort while at the same time reducing and resisting rituals. However, the PROCESS has A LOT of important parts that are often, unintentionally overlooked. It is common for people to say things like, “I’m constantly exposing myself to the triggers and I am not getting any better.” In these situations, it is common that people believe they are doing exposures but they are unintentionally missing key elements of the ERP process and therefore while they are being exposed to the OCD triggers, they aren’t actually doing exposures!
